Overview
The development of the Gelflex Gas Permeable Scleral Lens has
made available to patients the combined benefits of scleral
lenses with gas permeable materials.
"My view of the scleral lens is that it is the medical
contact lens 'par excellent'. There is no eye shape that cannot
be fitted with this type of lens and no degree of shortsightedness
or astimatism that cannot be corrected. |
|
Thanks to the concept of gas permeability, which you introduced
in modern times, this lens type has achieved a much greater range
of applications and has exceeded the capabilities of a number of
other special lens designs."

The Gelflex Gas Permeable Scleral Lens, as first described by Donald
F Ezekiel, founder and clinical consultant, Gelflex Laboratories,
is an FDA approved lens.
Benefits
The benefits of the Gelflex RGP Scleral Lens include:
Excellent initial comfort.
As the lens rests on the insensitive sclera, vaults
the cornea and because of it's large overall diameter, lid interaction
is minimised.
Optimum vision.
The Gas Permeable Scleral Lens is a stable lens
with a large optic zone. The rigid lens neutralises corneal distortions
and being a stable lens with large optic, provides
optimum vision.
Comfort wear.
The Gelflex Gas Permeable Scleral Lens is manufactured
from FDA approved materials .
Boston EO and Harmony materials. The Harmony material
has the inbuilt hydrophilic monomer in the material resulting in
a lens with a constant wet surface.
Fatt calculates that for a DK of 100 ( DK = 127)
and with the normal thickness of a scleral lens, the eye receives
5 times more oxygen to it that the eye needs.
Eye protector.
Being a lens of large overall size and high DK
to stabilise fit, the lens is ideal as a protector for the cornea.
Examples where this has been demonstrated include
corneal erosions and French's Dystrophy.
The Gelflex Gas Permeable Scleral Lens can be worn when swimming
without risk of loss.
Being manufactured from a gas permeable material, the lens
will not absorb bacteria.
Fitting Procedure - Summary
Four fitting sets are available
1. FLOM measuring 28 lens set. Allows for the accurate fitting of
the central optic portion of the cornea.
2. Scleral 3 lens fitting Set. Allows for the measurement of the
scleral curve and lens overall diameter.
3. Keratoconic and Post Graft 8 lens Set
The Keratoconic/Post Graft set has been developed. consisting of
a series of lenses with progressively increasing vaults.
4. A Flom set with reverse geometry back optic for the post RK,
PRK and Lasik patient
